Is there a natural remedy for arthritis? by Beth Chiofalo

What is arthritis?

There are many different types of arthritis and each has its own cause. The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis. It is simply the inflammation of the joint which can be caused by accidents where the joint is affected and then arthritis can start at an earlier age. However, it is most commonly associated with aging.

Rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis are autoimmune diseases where the body begins attacking itself. Rheumatoid arthritis is painful and disabling as it progresses and can eventually lead to immobility. It is most notable with the twisting of the fingers and toes and unusually large knuckles. Psoriatic arthritis is a type of inflammatory arthritis that occurs in people that have psoriasis. It can manifest itself about 10 years after the initial diagnosis of psoriasis. It is treated the same way as rheumatoid.

How is arthritis treated?

Arthritis is primarily treated with a Cox-2 inhibitor or NSAIDs. Cox-2 inhibitors are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that block the Cox-2 enzyme. Researchers and pharmaceutacals look for drugs that can impede this enzyme so that the chemical messengers (prostaglandins) can not cause the pain and swelling of arthiritis inflammation. NSAID stands for Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and are commonly prescribed medications for the inflammation of arthritis and other body tissues, such as in tendinitis and bursitis. Most widely known over the counter NSAIDs are Motrin, Aspirin, and Naproxen.

What are common side effects of NSAIDs?

Some of the common side effects include abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloating, heartburn, and upset stomach. Short-term use is recommended to avoid many of the side effects. However, with extended use some can develop ulcers in the stomach which can lead to other severe problems and even put the patient at risk for cancer.

Is there a solution to arthritis relief without side effects?

There are several all-natural Cox-2 inhibitors and anti-inflammatory products that can be used in the treatment of arthritis. N-Acetyl-Glucosamine, for example, is a form of glucosamine that is unique in that it is more easily utilized by some people. Oral glucosamine is commonly used for the treatment of osteoarthritis. Since glucosamine is a precursor for glycosaminoglycans, and glycosaminoglycans are a major component of joint cartilage, supplemental glucosamine may help to rebuild cartilage and treat arthritis. Yucca, which the Native Americans of the southwest have used for many years, is also known to have qualities that support overall joint health and curcumin is an all natural Cox-2 inhibitor that comes from the tumeric plant.

All Natural Products for Arthritis Relief

There are many products on the market that a consumer can purchase in a health food chain or even in the herbal section of your local drug store. Look for glucosamine as the main ingredient but you may want to look for some of the other above ingredients as well. The benefits to taking an all natural product is the absence of side effects or long term side effects. The downside to taking an all natural remedy is the time it may take to feel relief from the symptoms. It takes longer for the benefits of the all natural product to take effect but may be worth the peace of mind.
