Common sense ways to lose weight and keep it off.

We all know there are no fast and easy ways to lose weight. You have to commit and put in the hard work. It has to be a permanent life change if you want the weight loss to be permanent. Common sense says we have to exercise and eat right. Think about it....How hard is that really. Here are four simple tips to weight loss.

1. We need to change our eating habits and change them permanently. We don't need to purchase all the low carb, low fat, fat free, low calorie garbage. It is usually loaded with preservatives and tons of things we can't pronounce or even begin to know what they are or what they do. Why not eat the foods God gave us. Fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and legumes, meat and dairy are nutritious and delicious. They give us what our bodies need and are not overly altered. Herbs, spices and oils can be used to make ordinary foods very tasty. It's all about balance. Eat a combination of carbs and protein at every meal. Even snacks can include both carbs and protein. How about an apple or celery sticks with peanut butter, or cottage cheese with peaches or pears.

2. Now we need to work on portions. Do you really need to supersize?? Slow down and enjoy your food, have a conversation with your family or coworkers. If you eat slower you can pay attention to when you are starting to feel satisfied. When you get to this point....STOP EATING! You don't have to finish everything on your plate. If you don't like the idea of throwing away food, make sure you don't take too much to start with, if you did take too much, wrap it up and put it in the fridge. Do you have a sweet tooth? Most people do. How about eating a bite size or fun size candy bar, instead a full size candy bar? I will sometimes enjoy just a bite of chocolate after a meal. I get the enjoyment of the chocolate without the guilt of eating too much.

3. Yes, we need to exercise. Is exercise really as horrible as everyone says. NO, its all about attitude. Change the way you think about exercise. Use positive thinking until it becomes habit and you come to believe that exercise makes you feel better. It makes you healthier and happier. Do activities that you enjoy. Walking is easy and enjoyable. Put on your headphones, listen to your favorite music and enjoy the fresh air. Maybe you can get a friend, neighbor or family member to walk with you. Personally, I like the time to myself. The hardest part is getting into the habit of exercising, once you are there you can increase your time or speed, or add a new activity.

4. Expect to fail. That right...expect it! We all fail. Get over it and start again. Don't waste time wallowing in your guilt. Just start again and again and again. It is OK to have a bad day. Begin again the next day. Each day will become easier until eating right and exercise becomes a normal part of your life.

This isn't rocket science, folks, we need to eat right and exercise. It really is that simple. We make things so much harder than they need to be with negative thinking and bad attitudes. We just need to turn off the TV, put on our walking shoes, and get going. While we are at it, we'll throw away the potato chips and get out the apples. Change your life!
